HUMANS OF BIS
Glimpse of BIS preparing for the Midterm Exams.
David ( grade. 9)
" I am preparing for the midterm right now, kind of..? Hardest subject is English. We are doing essay writing and it's super hard. My English teacher is Mr, Arbuckle. Are you asking me if he is a tough grader? Umm, Annette says yes. I thinks so too.. Who is the hardest grader? Hmm..( glimps towards Ms. Seong.) Well, hopefully I'll get a B.. "
"I am quite busy. I am always working hard making your midterms tests. You know how I like to challenge you guys. This time, I'm going to challenge you guys by looking into critical thinkings . I also want you guys to look at different perspectives and different avenues rather than the typical responses. The main criteria that I consider when I grade the exams is the combination between the basic foundation : the things that we have learned and inputting your own understanding. Remember, our class is always a skills course, never a content course. I don't care whatever things that you guys memorize. I need you guys to know how to use that information. Yes, I do know that many of you think my grading system is harsh. My response is,
"So sad, too bad. Remember, my grading system is not harsh, it's realistic.^^"
. Joon Kim ( grade. 11 )
"It is extremely hard for me to prepare for the midterms because there are so many units and vocabs to fully understand and memorize. However, I am still trying my best by covering one subject per day. But unfortunately, it's not going that well...:( At first, I strongly believed that I could finish one subject per day. However, I got tired after school, so I could not follow my plan. Well until now, I find English most challenging. I think I need some extra marks. After midterm, I'm not sure I'll come to school anymore!"
Message to Ms. Seong
"Ms. Seong you know you are one of the best teachers that I know. I love you."
"I don't care about midterms. I don't have any midterms. Midterms are funny. At the university I went to, we had oral exams for midterm and they were the worst. Usually, we would have to talk about big philosophical, complicated ideas, but in the midterm, we would have to memorize all the small insignificant facts. I think midterm is fair for some people, because some people learn and retain information in a different way. But it's overwhelming to you guys, so I don't like it that much. I guess it's a "necessary evil" in some ways.(smiles)"
Annette Lee ( grade 9 )
"I was in the Math class and my classmates were taking a retest. But I didn't take one, so I just studied other subjects. It's my first time taking midterm exams at BIS. The hardest part is that I don't remember the specific details about science, so I have to study it all over again. I'm a kind of a person who usually study everything right before the test, but since this is the midterm, I guess I'll have to prepare at least 3~4 days before the exam. "
"I am crazy busy right now having 5 courses make midterm for. I have Physics 11, Physics 12, Math 10, 11, and 12. Plus, I am trying to prepare some practice questions for each class. That's a lot of work. What am I going to do after midterm? We're going to move on to the next unit (obviously). We.. we are going to move on. "
Message to the students:
As long as you can keep on with the materials in class, it should be fine. Unless you' haven't been doing your homework, midterm should be fine:)
Agnes Lee ( grade 11)
"I'm currently preparing for 6 midterms. This is too much. ( interviewer asks, " what do you want to say to your teachers?" ) They are all here! (laughs) Uhh.. I think midterms are horrible idea.. If I were the teacher, I would go with a open book test, oh that's too much, right? I think I'll go with more of multiple choice questions rather than short answer questions because they are so stressful. ( the interviewer relates wholeheartedly) The test that I'm fearing the most is the Social Studies because we have to write an essay and we have 55 multiple choice questions!
Message to Mr. Whitehead:
" Thank you, Mr. Whitehead for teaching us Social Studies with such enthusiasm all the time. I'll do well on my Provincial test. Thank you. (solemnly) "
