Like most countries around the world, Korea loves its food. While it’s typical for people to think of bibimbap, bulgogi, and kimchi when asked to name Korean foods, Korea actually has many food trends that people aren’t so aware of.
What are food trends? Food trends are the food flavors, dishes, and items that are popular at the given moment. In Korea, perhaps certain flavors or one particular food item significantly affects the entire food market. For instance, when there was the banana trend, Korean top food companies such as Lotte, Nongshim, Haetae, and Orion have come up with all kinds of banana flavoured snacks and treats that have been iconic. Some other food trends include: strawberry, chocolate, matcha, honey butter, cheese, and wasabi.
Not only certain companies but also cafes and restaurants have been stepping up their games in the whole food trend rush. For instance, a Korean dessert cafe “Sulbing”, which provides some of the best shaved ice in Korea releases new flavours of shaved ice depending on the food trend that is present during the given time, such as the “banana sulbing”, “one strawberry”, and “one chocolate”. Even buffets such as Ashley and VIPS consistently renew their menus which always attracts more and more individuals.
On top of all these scrumptious options, there is another aspect that draws more people: advertisement. There are so many pro Youtubers, instagrammers, and twitterers who are paid to review certain food products or restaurants and upload them onto their social media. Although people are introduced to more food options and the companies can benefit economically through these SNS advertisements, we do need to take into consideration that these posts are for the purpose of endorsing or advertising a certain company, which means they may not always be the truth. Olivia Joung from grade 11 mentioned that “Every time I see an instagram post of someone’s 5/5 review on a restaurant and I visit that same restaurant, I’m almost always disappointed and never really trust those posts because they’re getting paid to write in that way”.
Overall, Korean food trends impact the vast majority of Korea's food companies and their product ideas. In order to impress the public and also to even start a new food revolution, companies will need to create more original items that sets them apart from the others.
What do you think will be the next food trend?
